Knowing, the Objectless Subject
Don’t go to sleep in myths, stories, and fantasies of becoming. Wake up!
This work is about coming to know for yourself what’s true, coming to know who you are essentially.
Who you are essentially is freedom itself.
Recognizing who you are essentially is the beginning of this work. It’s not something that happens after forty more years of seeking. The recognition happens now. Let’s look.
Relax the focus of attention.
Don’t attend to any object in particular
like a thought, feeling, sensation, or sound.
Every object that’s appearing is fine,
nothing needs to be excluded.
Just for a moment,
allow your attention to be open and free.
For most of us, very quickly attention will focus on an object. Quite often that object is a thought. a thought appears and attention focuses on that thought. Attention may also focus on other objects like sights, sounds or sensations. this is completely natural, there’s nothing wrong with this movement. Just notice when it happens.
As soon as you notice that attention has focused on an object, once again, relax the focus of attention, just be open knowing.
In this work, there’s no pressure or trying to get rid of anything at all. It’s about turning attention to truth. Truth is always here and now. It’s not something you’ll attain in the future.
It’s what’s here, now.
In truth, let’s notice a few things together.
One thing we notice is that everything is included here, all the sensory objects (sights, sounds, smells, tactile sensations) and all the objects of thought, feeling, and emotion.
Everything is included.
When we’re focused on one particular object, which is quite often thoughts, attention is exclusively focused on that object.
Thoughts become a world, our world in that moment. Thoughts are apparently the only things that exist, but it is a make-believe world.
When there’s a story going on in the mind, then that’s the world that’s being believed at that moment. But, it’s a world of fantasy and it’s very exclusive. Everything else is abandoned in favor of that fantasy. truth is abandoned for an illusory world of mind. let’s see that function.
Just honestly see what’s true, with no judgment.
Attention focuses on thoughts and we’re in a world of thinking, no problem.
When we notice that movement, just stop for a moment and be here now,
open, free.
What we notice is that in truth, there isn’t only the world of illusion, there’s actually everything else as well.
Everything is included in this knowing. Everything is known here.
The point of this and any true self-inquiry work is to stop attending to any object, including the thought based object called a “self.” Stop attending to any object and instead “Know thyself,” which is this knowing.
A very simple way to realize this is to know that I am.
Just see for yourself, you can’t deny it. I know that I am.
Most of our lives when we’ve said, “I know that I am,” we’ve meant, “I know I am this body mind organism.” We’ve been saying that we are an object. However, in this investigation, when I say, “I am,” I don’t mean, “I am this body or these thoughts.” I want you to see, I am this knowing that knows everything, including the body and thoughts.
I am.
I can’t deny, I am.
This knowing, who I am essentially, isn’t an object. It’s not thoughts, sensations, or feelings. It’s not a body. This is non-objectifiable, pure subject with no object. I knowing I.
Within me, knowing, all objects are appearing, including this body, thoughts, and sensations. this is where freedom is.
Freedom is not in the future. Freedom is not something you attain.
You recognize now that who you are is free, no-thing.
If we’re very honest, if we want to get real and stop believing in fantasies, which is what is required to know truth, then we have to look now and be honest. see, there’s no past, there’s no future. in truth, there’s only this, what is.
So then, where is this ego, this self, this character we’ve been believing we are for our whole life? It’s a fantasy. If one wants to be free, if one wants to be honest and truthful, then look now.
There is only what is.
If you recognize this, then you recognize simplicity. our essential nature is the most simple thing possible. Utter simplicity. No-thing.
Not a single word is needed for you to know this, not a single description, philosophy
, or definition. These words you are reading are only intended to turn your attention to truth. And then know, no-thing. Utter simplicity.
Do you want simplicity?
That’s what freedom is.
Words mean nothing. All the words you’ve heard, all the books you’ve read, all the teachings you’ve listened to, all the beautiful, poetic philosophies are wonderful entertainment, but they have nothing to do with truth, none of them. There are no descriptions needed, names and forms are not needed. only knowing is needed, which is objectless subject, no-thing.
This is who I am, you see?
With all the apparent differences among all the people in the world, we can all know one thing - I am knowing.
There is only one - I am knowing.
It’s exactly the same for everyone.
Don’t go to sleep in myths, stories, and fantasies of becoming.
Wake up!
Excerpt from Sal’s book, Blown Wide Open, A Collection of Holidays
Blown Wide Open is a book that shows you your essential being of freedom. It is not philosophy or a description of freedom; it reveals truth in a clear and obvious way as you are reading. It does not lay out yet another path and another goal, other than recognizing your freedom here and now.
I have read all your books twice. I think says it all. Thank you Sal.
Very very helpful today, Sal, thank you. Not sure why things "hit" when they do, when on other days the same message can be less well "hearable." But this resonated and stays, and thank you.
